Less is more!

12 Oct

Thank you all: performers, audience and bartenders at The Alibi last night. A lovely lady, Esther of Durham, said she was literally shaking with delight at the fun had. Another happy chappy, Ricky, called me this morning to tell me it was the best night out he’d had in ages.

We had fewer artists last night, so everyone had more time to do their party pieces. Qualitywise, everyone played and sang at the top of their game.

  1. Alan the Scot (harpist and bard) started the evening with 3 fine tunes from north of Carter Bar.
  2. Harriet Anderson (flute) joined Al to perform beautiful Irish and English folk music.
  3. Jem Bardin continued to excel with two new songs, including one, called appropriately this weekend, Poppies. Jem sings two new self penned songs every month and gets a gold star for creativity.
  4. Local spiritualist and medium Joy recited poems of snoring and gongs
  5. A new to Alibi face, Caroline Spencer, singer/guitarist performed 3 lovely covers. the audience raved and wouldn’t allow her to leave without an encore. Oasis’ Don’t Look Back, The Kinks’ Sunny Afternoon, and Beatles’ Blackbird sounded as sweet as ever.
  6. Kiersty Boone treated us to two of her inimitable poems. She was joined on stage by Roger Wood, who played “dirty old man on George Street” for the second poem.
  7. Neil Bogart (supported by the odd thwack from Theseus) was simply stunning. He has an amazing song writing talent.
  8. Mark the Slide surprised everyone with some dark yet evocative discordant slide stuff that reminded me of The Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death (google it!)
  9. Bradford Middleton recited poetry of bedsit land and a putrid mind. Not for the feint hearted.
  10. The Naked and the Dead (ie Al and I) sang/played four Floyd songs and She’s Not There by The Zombies – which we thoroughly enjoyed and thank the complimentary audience.
  11. Jo (Dirty Scavenger) Maultby, singer, songwriter and guitarist with her thunderous voice belted out half a dozen scorchers. Once again, cries of encore would not let her leave the stage.
  12. Theseus (turns a room into an instrument) and Ginnie on moothy-harps rap/reggaed a great set including a hip version of I Miss You. By the time they finished the audience was on it feet, dancing the night away.

Another great night of entertainment; great fun for both audience and artists alike. thank you everyone.

Thank you all!

Shine on…!

What a great night we had!

Thank you all: performers, audience and bartenders at The Alibi last night. We had a record equal number of performers last night, who all contributed to a memorable evening.

  1. Alan the Scot and Harriet started the evening in eloquent form. “Oh Danny Boy!”s vibe was so moving it broke the pa.
  2. Jem Bardin crooned about September girls with slender legs and how he’s looking for more “blendology”
  3. Debutants Canadian, Alex (our first ever dramatist) and Samantha gave a innovative rendition about relationships and goldfish. “Takes Notes.” We hope to see more from Alex & Sam in future
  4. Bill & his serious Ukelele sang of how Brighton’s West Street compares with Champs Elysee.
  5. Debutant Dan Burne‘s beautiful guitar work brought the audience to an attentive silence as he picked his way through 3 soothing melodies.
  6. (Mon pere) David Thomas and (his new band of impromptu acolytes) the Alibites delivered an avant garde, improv set, par excellence. Debutant Darryl Boon (please return) on clarinet – wow, ahead of the wave and faultless, Neil Bogart sliding macabre strings on guitar, Theseus slam dunking percussion, Bill on serious ukelele and Ginnie blowing in the mind, from the side.
  7. Mark the Slide followed with some loud winged-eel-fingerling blues.
  8. Jo Mortimer & Dan Burne – chanteuse and guitar quietened the mood to provide some much needed respite while we readied ourselves to finish the marathon evening.
  9. Neil Bogart (supported by Theseus) delivered his (as always) 3 belter songs. He took the phrase Lovesick to new depths of anger, sadness, fear and guilt.
  10. The Folking Hippies – a mighty fine and diverse group of talented musicians (voice, flute, accordion, bass, guitar and percussion) gave us 3 songs including a wonderful rendition of  John Barleycorn.
  11. Poet, Kiersty Boon (supported by me and a Beatles backing track) created much myrth and applause to her infamous “All you need is not-love.”
  12. The Naked and the Dead (ie Al and I) sang/played The Weight and Man Who Sold the World – which we thoroughly enjoyed and thank the complimentary audience.
  13. Jo (Dirty Scavenger) Maultby, singer, songwriter and guitarist with her thunderous voice reminded us all of the dark side.
  14. Theseus (turns a room into an instrument) and Ginnie on mouth-harps rapped/bluesed their way through a fine set, including a raunchy reminder of what it’s like to “wake up and make love to me.”

Musically, talentwise, diversewise the evening was up there with the best of them without Quantitative Easing.

Thank you all!

Shine on…!
